Using Saferty Turtle as a "Man Overboard" [MOB] Alarm
Children, adults and dogs are all potential "Man Overboard" (MOB) accident victims. A Safety Turtle MOB alarm instantly alerts others on board. In addition, a wireless lanyard version is available (see below) that simultaneously turns off the boat's engine, to prevent propeller injury and further reduce rescue time.
A Safety Turtle MOB alarm does NOT substitute for a life jacket. While complementing a life jacket above deck, the Turtle should also be worn by young children below deck, as a last layer of protection
Rescue may not be successful or even possible if the subject is not wearing a life jacket.
Performance of Safety Turtle in sea and brackish water is limited. TheTurtle must break the surface of seawater after becoming wet to activate the alarm
Locate the Base Station above the boat's hull, normally in the cockpit. Use Terrapin's weatherproof carrying bag or equivalent to protect Base Station from rain or spray.
Note: If 12 volt battery power is conveniently accessible through a cigarette lighter plug, purchase Safety Turtle's 12 V lighter adaptor accessory rather than run Base Station from its AC adaptor and an inverter. At 75 milliamps, the direct draw of Base Station on a boat's battery is negligible.
Note: Terrapin's Turtle Power battery pack may work as an uninterrupted power supply from either a 120 VAC or a 12 VDC primary source.
Test coverage in accordance with User Guide. Immerse Turtle at fore, aft, port and starboard locations. For complete testing, troll Turtle completely around the boat
Reminder: Stern coverage is most important when the boat is in motion.
Confirm audibility of Base Station alarm throughout boat, with its motor running. If using Terrapin's Turtle Power battery pack, confirm audibility of rapid fault mode beeping, indicating low battery. Remove baby Turtle from Base Station to initiate fault mode beeping.
If coverage or audibility is limited, consider use of a second Base Station or Commercial System, which has a very loud secondary alarm that can be located below deck.
Turtle wristbands are available in child and adult length. An adaptor conveniently attaches the Turtle arms to any pet collar, life jacket strap or belt.
Use In Fresh Water
The Turtle can signal from many feet under water. The Turtle may therefore be worn anywhere on the person, except under clothing that might prevent or delay it getting wet on entry in the water.
Note: Pools and hot tubs have a much higher salt content and hence higher conductivity than natural fresh water. Therefore, when using with these water hazards, the Turtle should only be worn on the wrist.
For further explanation go to: Using Safety Turtle in Salt Water Pools.
Use In Sea or Brackish Water
With children, the Turtle should be attached to an upper rear strap of the life jacket, above the child's buoyancy line, but sure that the Turtle will get wet on entry and/or when bobbing in sea water.
Older children and adults may wear Turtle on wrist, but hand must come out of water to activate alarm. This may require a conscious action by the victim.
Warning: For alarming to occur in sea or brackish water, the Turtle must first get wet, then break the surface of the seawater
To test coverage around boat, troll Turtle on surface of water.
