Safety Turtle Warnings

Using Safety Turtle In Salt Water
The thing to remember is that sea water, unlike fresh water, is an electromagnetic shield. Only half an inch of sea water effectively blocks the signal from an activated Turtle. On initial entry, a Turtle may therefore sink too fast to initiate alarming.

With this in mind, to work reliably, the Turtle must break or nearly break the surface of the water after initial entry, i.e., while wet.

Consider the case of boating. If worn on a life vest a few inches above the water line, the system is 100 % reliable. If worn on the wrist of a non swimmer not wearing a life vest, alarming may be delayed, or not occur at all. But chances of a hand breaking the surface of sea water [more buoyant than fresh] after initial entry are high, even of a non swimmer, providing the subject is not weighed by shoes, etc.

Now consider a shoreline. The first concern is spatial coverage - the Base Station has the same coverage of a shoreline whether water is fresh or salt. However, with seawater, there is no depth coverage. So, as in the boating case, a wet Turtle needs to break the surface after initial entry to ensure alarming. At a beach, particularly with rollers, this is likely. For a child reaching down, e.g., with a bucket, it is almost certain. A fall into deep water from a height will not be detected if the line of site is obstructed, e.g., by a sea wall.

For reasons that should now be obvious, when using with sea water, Turtle must be worn either on the wrist or on life vest above the water buoyancy line. Safety Turtle has proven reliable with pets, providing Turtle is located on top side of collar.

Safety Turtle is not a substitute for supervision, barriers, and other measures, for children. It is only effective as a last layer of protection.

Using Safety Turtle with Fresh Water Shorelines

The coverage of a shoreline will always be limited, because the Base Station alarms on the presence, not the absence, of a signal. The User must be aware of the limits of coverage.

In a clear line of site, with the Base Station at waist level or higher off the ground, typical range is 150 feet (45 meters). So a Base Station situated at a shoreline can potentially cover 150 feet (45 meters) in each direction, for total of 300 feet (90 meters) [Actual coverage varies and must be measured.]

If the Base Station is set back from the shoreline, the length and in some cases the continuity of shoreline coverage will be reduced by:

The set back distance
Signal reduced or blocked by trees, ridge, etc.
Signal reduced or blocked by building exterior (if located indoors)
In all cases and with all water hazards, coverage must be tested at set up using test mode.

In the case of a waterfront, there are basically three options in setting up.

Option 1 - Base Station is located in the residence. This is most suitable when the residence is within 30 feet (10 meters) of the water and the shoreline is completely visible. Otherwise, shoreline coverage will be considerably reduced. The Base Station should be high enough to clear any ridge blocking view of the shoreline. Locating outside on a deck will provide best coverage. Follow other instructions in the User Guide.

Option 2 - One or more Base Station(s) are located by shoreline, up to 300 feet (90 meters) apart. This provides up to 300 feet (90 meters) of coverage per Base Station. Each Base Station requires AC power and a canapé or enclosure that protects it from rain but doesn't diminish loudness. The Base Station should be 3 feet (1 meter) or higher above the ground, on a platform, or hanging. The alarm must be audible in the residence, or as required by the caregiver(s).

Option 3 - Option 3 This option overcomes the shoreline and audibility coverage limitations of Options 1 and 2 respectively, but is more expensive. Primary set up is identical to Option 2, except an Integrator Base Station(s) rather than Base Station(s) is used. The Transmitter plugged into an Integrator Base Station radios the Remote Alarm, so alarming simultaneously occurs both at the shoreline and in the residence. See diagram.

A longer cable from the 9-volt AC wall adapter is available from Terrapin to facilitate Options 2 and 3.

If electricity is not available at the residence, a solar-charged battery unit may be used to power the Base Station, which draws only 75 milliamps [when not alarming]. Alternatively, Turtle Power can provide 9 hours per day operation, when charged nightly by the car battery, using a Terrapin-supplied 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter.

Using Saferty Turtle as a "Man Overboard" [MOB] Alarm

Children, adults and dogs are all potential "Man Overboard" (MOB) accident victims. A Safety Turtle MOB alarm instantly alerts others on board. In addition, a wireless lanyard version is available (see below) that simultaneously turns off the boat's engine, to prevent propeller injury and further reduce rescue time.

A Safety Turtle MOB alarm does NOT substitute for a life jacket. While complementing a life jacket above deck, the Turtle should also be worn by young children below deck, as a last layer of protection

Rescue may not be successful or even possible if the subject is not wearing a life jacket.
Performance of Safety Turtle in sea and brackish water is limited. TheTurtle must break the surface of seawater after becoming wet to activate the alarm

Locate the Base Station above the boat's hull, normally in the cockpit. Use Terrapin's weatherproof carrying bag or equivalent to protect Base Station from rain or spray.

Note: If 12 volt battery power is conveniently accessible through a cigarette lighter plug, purchase Safety Turtle's 12 V lighter adaptor accessory  rather than run Base Station from its AC adaptor and an inverter. At 75 milliamps, the direct draw of Base Station on a boat's battery is negligible.

Note: Terrapin's Turtle Power  battery pack may work as an uninterrupted power supply from either a 120 VAC or a 12 VDC primary source.

Test coverage in accordance with User Guide. Immerse Turtle at fore, aft, port and starboard locations. For complete testing, troll Turtle completely around the boat

Reminder: Stern coverage is most important when the boat is in motion.

Confirm audibility of Base Station alarm throughout boat, with its motor running. If using Terrapin's Turtle Power battery pack, confirm audibility of rapid fault mode beeping, indicating low battery. Remove baby Turtle from Base Station to initiate fault mode beeping.

If coverage or audibility is limited, consider use of a second Base Station or Commercial System, which has a very loud secondary alarm that can be located below deck.

Turtle wristbands are available in child and adult length. An adaptor  conveniently attaches the Turtle arms to any pet collar, life jacket strap or belt.

Use In Fresh Water

The Turtle can signal from many feet under water. The Turtle may therefore be worn anywhere on the person, except under clothing that might prevent or delay it getting wet on entry in the water.

Note: Pools and hot tubs have a much higher salt content and hence higher conductivity than natural fresh water. Therefore, when using with these water hazards, the Turtle should only be worn on the wrist.
For further explanation go to: Using Safety Turtle in Salt Water Pools.

Use In Sea or Brackish Water

With children, the Turtle should be attached to an upper rear strap of the life jacket, above the child's buoyancy line, but sure that the Turtle will get wet on entry and/or when bobbing in sea water.

Older children and adults may wear Turtle on wrist, but hand must come out of water to activate alarm. This may require a conscious action by the victim.

Warning: For alarming to occur in sea or brackish water, the Turtle must first get wet, then break the surface of the seawater

To test coverage around boat, troll Turtle on surface of water.
